When it comes to the daily skin care regimen, many people go straight from cleansing to treating and moisturizing, and skip over the toner. Skin toners have historically gotten a bad reputation for being superfluous, over-drying, or even confused with astringent (an alcohol-based product to remove excess oil).
However, omitting toner from your skincare lineup just might be the obstacle standing in your path to radiant skin – it’s actually step #4 in the time-honored K-Beauty 10-step routine! Here are three reasons why toner shouldn’t be overlooked:
- Toner helps balance your skin’s pH level: pH is a barometer for how acidic or alkaline your skin is, and tipping in one direction or the other can cause redness, irritation, and other negative effects. On a scale of 1 to 14, your skin should be a 5.5. Applying toner will help neutralize the top layer of your skin post-cleansing, keep it healthy and protected
- Toner adds moisture back to your skin. After washing, cleansing, and exfoliating, toner is the next step to replenish lost moisture. When it comes to formulations, look for a toner that’s filled with naturally moisturizing ingredients, such as Aloe Vera. According to Kelly Horton-Beeman, a licensed aesthetician of FACES SkinGym, Aloe Vera is “the perfect next step process in adding moisture back into the skin after exfoliating." She also likes it for its “soothing antioxidant and antibacterial benefits, which make it a great option for all skin types.”
Aloisia Beauty’s DEEP HYDRATION Aloe Gel Mist, can be used as a toner post-cleanse – it’s formulated with not one, but two forms of Aloe – Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Water (90%) and Aloe BarbadensisLeaf Extract (100ppm) – plus pore-tightening and inflammation-fighting Witch Hazel, hydrating Hydrolyzed Collagen, healing Centella Asiatica Extract, and other clean natural and science-made ingredients.
- Toner preps your skin. Now that your skin is clean, soft, and hydrated, it’s primed to better absorb the treatment and moisturizing products left in your routine. Skin acts like a sponge and soaks up what you put on its surface, but if skin is out of balance and dry, it’s more difficult to absorb serums, essences, and moisturizers. Toner sets skin up for success.
Although at first it might feel like adding a toner is one more step in the daily routine, it’s a step in the right direction to healthy, glowing skin!
