Health and beauty go hand-in-hand, which is why flawless, ageless, radiant skin isn’t just about what you put on the surface – it actually “glows” much deeper. In order to look your best, you need to feel your best. From the foods you eat and the products you use, to making “me-time” count, there are tons of tweaks you can make to your daily routine to tap into the inner wellness that shines outward through your complexion. If you aren’t sure where to start, here are 5 simples tips to get glowing skin from within.
1. Opt for clean skincare. Cleansers, moisturizers, sunscreens, and other skincare products have shown the potential to absorb beyond your pores, and into your bloodstream and lymphatic system. That’s why it’s super-important that your skincare products are formulated with clean ingredients, which are effective without being health-harming. Swap out harsh bleaching agents like Hydroquinone with Niacinamide (a water-soluble form of Vitamin B3 and a key ingredient in our Brightening Radiance Mask) or plant-derived Licorice Root to fade hyperpigmentation and brighten skin tone. If using harsh or irritating ingredients to de-wrinkle makes you feel uneasy, try the plumping and smoothing effects of collagen.
2. Set a skincare ritual: Taking the boring “routine” out of daily skincare by replacing it with a pampering “ritual” will help both your skin and soul sparkle! Whether you add a few new layers like double-cleansing or commit to a multi-step program like K-Beauty’s 10-step regimen, following a routine not only gives your skin extra TLC, studies show routines also boost your mood and self-confidence!
3. Manage anxiety. When you feel calm, so does your skin! Anxious feelings can trigger excess oil production and breakouts, wrinkles from furrowing your eyebrow and mouth areas, and it can even kick-off skin conditions like eczema. A few ways to de-stress your skin and spirit include carving out 15 to 20 minutes of relaxing downtime a few times a week with a sheet mask – there’s a mask for just about every skin concern. And did you know that some foods, like sugar, wheat, and gluten can induce anxiety? Test-out anti-anxiolytic foods: foods that have shown to decrease anxiety, like pastas made with chickpeas instead of wheat, or protein bars sweetened with Monk Fruit instead of sugar (we love the bars from BHU Foods). You can learn more about this from Liana Werner-Gray, a certified nutritionist. Treating yourself to a face massage also aids in releasing tension. Try relaxing clenched facial muscles by smoothing on your nightly moisturizer with a Gua Sha or Facial Roller.
4. Get a taste of #Jello: Have you heard of #jelloskin? Beauty guru Ava Lee explains it best. It not only means super-bouncy, ultra-elastic skin, it refers to the holistic approach it takes to achieve it. “J” is for the journey; “E” is for eating balanced meals filled with health-loving nutrients and minerals; “L” stands for living a lifestyle that fulfills your own individual needs, followed by another “L” for laughing (another great way to release facial tension); and “O” is for old, as in “accept the aging process gracefully.”
5. Learn to love H2O. Our bodies need a recommended 2.7 liters of water per day! Not only does it help flush out toxins to help you stay healthy and function optimally, it also quenches your skin’s thirst for hydration and keeps it naturally elastic and moisturized! For a splash of additional benefits, try Alkaline water, which has shown to neutralize acid in the body and improve hydration, energy, digestion, the immune system, and overall health.
