With the world-famous Korean 10-step skin care ritual, a timeless beauty practice coveted for its numerous benefits and dewy, “glass skin” results, anyone can take their skin care routine to the next level. Whether you want to follow all 10 steps or just select the steps that work for you, your K-Beauty routine can always be adjusted depending on what your skin needs on any given day. Here, we break down each of the 10 steps for you, starting with some of the benefits:
- It transforms skin care from a daily chore (must-do) into pampering self-care (want to).
- It takes a layered approach – each step is designed to help protect the skin barrier to prevent skin damage, which is the cornerstone of the K-Beauty philosophy.
- It offers a gentle approach to skincare, with less use of harsh retinols or acids
- It harnesses the power of clean ingredients from nature and science to protect, hydrate, and treat your skin.
- With consistency, you’ll see visible results, no matter your age or skin type.
K-Beauty’s daily 10-step regimen kicks off with the double cleanse, which takes face-washing to another level by prepping skin to A. absorb other products and ingredients; B. better address concerns like acne and signs of aging, and C. create a clean canvas for make-up and bedtime. The routine ends with a hydrating, protecting finale of moisturizer and sunscreen (AM) or simply moisturizer (PM). To break it all down for you, here is our guide to the K-Beauty’s 10-step skin care routine!
- Step #1 - Oil-Based Cleanser: An oil-based cleanser is the first step in the double-cleanse and emulsifies to melt away daily grime like makeup, SPF, dirt, and bacteria, all without stripping away your skin’s essential moisture. Our own NOURISH Oil Cleanser does its job with a carefully-curated, ultra-emollient blend of Apricot Kernel Oil, Olive Oil, Grapeseed Oil, and Argan Oil, and four more essential oils all rich in Omega 3s, nutrients, and antioxidants to leave skin clean, soft, replenished, and moisturized.
- Step #2 - Water-Based Cleanser: A water-based cleanser is the next step in double-cleansing, and rinses away residual pollutants like dirt and sweat to ensure your face is fully cleansed. Our gentle foaming REFRESH Jade Purifying Cleanser delivers a skin-balancing pH of 5.4 and the detoxifying powers of Jade+Water, a high-alkaline water filtered through the fine white jade stratum deep within the Korean mountains. It also includes Ceramides, Green Tea, Propolis, and Korean Angelica to strengthen, smooth, and protect your skin’s natural barrier.
- Step #3 - Exfoliate: Exfoliating refines your skin’s surface by sweeping away dead skin cells, clearing pores, smoothing texture, boosting clarity, and clearing the way for other products to work more effectively. There are two ways to exfoliate: chemical (dissolves) and physical (friction). Our GLOW Exfoliating Soft Peel does both: it’s formulated with an exfoliating duo of Papaya Fruit enzymes to gently slough off build-up and plant-based Microcrystalline Cellulose for tender buffing, along with other ingredients like Sodium Hyaluronate, Lipidure® PMB, and the amino acid Argenine to lock-in moisture and pump up the plump, plus brightening Licorice Root.
- Step #4 - Toner: A toner is like the palate-cleanser of skin care: for this “course,” it’s swiped across your t-zone using a cotton wipe or pad to eradicate the leftovers from previous steps, shrink pores, and rebalance and moisten your skin’s natural barrier to better receive all the wonderful benefits of upcoming steps. Our multi-tasking DEEP HYDRATION Aloe Gel Mist is one way to tone with the benefits Aloe, Witch Hazel, and other good-for-you ingredients.
- Step #5 - Essence: There’s a good reason why the product called “essence” sits right between the toner and ampoule or serum steps. It’s similar to a toner in hydrating and priming the skin for what follows, but also much like a serum or ampoule, it delivers a targeted treatment like nourishing, anti-aging, or brightening – just less-concentrated. An essence can also be patted directly onto your skin, waking it up with the power of touch.
- Step #6 - Ampoule or Serum: One of the most customized steps, a serum or ampoule helps you zero-in on and treat specific skin care concerns like fine lines and wrinkles, sagging, blemishes, and hyperpigmentation with super-active ingredients and highly-concentrated formulations.
- Step #7 - Sheet Mask: A sheet mask delivers a slew of benefits, from capitalizing on all the customized goodness of a serum by sealing it in, undisturbed by evaporation or the elements, to providing up to 20 minutes of blissful downtime while it works its magic. Our sheet masks range from brightening to soothing to anti-aging, and they’re all made with a biodegradable and silky lux cupra fabric that sits comfortably and evenly on your skin. We even have an award-winning sheet mask set, 7-Day Skin Care System, which curates seven different sheet masks for the top concerns.
- Step #8 - Eye Cream: Eyes have their own unique skin concerns, like bags, lines, dark circles, and thin skin, which warrants its own step and specialty products for this delicate and sensitive area of the face.
- Step #9 - Moisturizer: You can never have enough opportunities to moisturize, which is why Korean skin care is known for its age-less, glassy results. A moisturizer can come in many forms (cream, lotion, gel) and textures (lightweight or thick), but they all share the common goal of keeping your skin’s natural lipid barrier hydrated and plump to seal in all the goodness from the products you’ve just applied.
- Step #10 - Sun Block: A sun block is your first line of defense against aging and damage, so it’s only fitting it’s applied as the last step – before you step out the door! It’s important to know difference between a sunscreen, which uses chemicals to suck up UV rays before they get too deep to cause damage, and a sun block, which sits on top of the skin and creates physical shield against UV rays.
Now that you’ve had a quick education on K-Beauty’s 10-step skin care routine, you’ll be better prepared to take the leap and customize it with the right products for your skin care needs!
